Hydrangea Help!!

by Heather on July 30, 2010

I LOVE hydranges,
but they don’t seem to love me.
I am somewhat limited being in zone 4/5 Northern MI.
But I do have three different varieties
(none of them looking no where as good as this one pictured)
Limelight, Annabelle, and Mystery $.85 cent clearance
one from last year.
And so typical.. it is the eighty five center
that is doing the best :)
I found this awesome web site Hydrangeas Hydrangeas
which has tons of info that I need to scour.
I am determined that these babies won’t get the
best of me…
Guess I better get off my butt and get outside :)
Do you grow Hydrangeas? What kinds?
Any tips or advice for this novice?

Last year was my first year diving into the world of hydrangeas. I adore them. I now have 4 and all are of the Endless Summer variety. They are in a partial/mostly shaded area next to the house. Last year I read that they love water when they are new so I made sure to water them heavily last year. This year I slacked on it and noticed that while I had lovely flowers the plants themselves seemed to be a bit lanky. I set to watering them a few times a week and within 3 weeks they have decided to go on a growth spurt. They are filling out quite nicely. The soil that they are in is not the loveliest of soil. Slightly clay like. Heavy.

Love Hydrangeas! I have Endless Summer and Limelight varieties and mine have been gorgeous. We did plant them with a peat moss mix initially and do have to water them a lot but other than that I don't do much. My mom has an Endless Summer one up there and hers is huge and gorgeous…both of ours are planted on the north side so not in full sun.

Thanks for the tips ladies! I moved my Annabelle last fall because it was in way too hot of sun. This year it's doing a little better but I'm afraid it's still in too sunny of a spot. And I've been slacking on watering. I'm thinking about moving it in the fall to the side of my house that gets almost literally NO sun.. does anyone out know if that would fly or not? The funny thing is that my clearance plant is in the same spot and gets the same treatment. Neither of them have blooms but I'm not surprised given how they looked last year. But it's not nearly as lanky or falling over as my Annabelle. My limelights look good though still no blooms. I lost one of them over the winter so that made me sad but such is gardening… :)
