DIY Hanging Mason Jar Lantern or Vase.. Make it for MOM!

by postroad on April 28, 2011

Hi! And dare I say, how’s it hanging?
Yep, great here too :)  Now I’ve got a question for you!!
Want to learn how to make this sweet hanging Mason Jar?
I am wired up and fired up to share with you, my dearlen’ readers!
And yes, this would be perfect for Mother’s Day!
Talk about an inexpensive, heartfelt, handmade gift!
And if you’re missing your mom this Mother’s Day this would be the perfect way
to remember her!
Get yourself some fresh flowers and let those memories flow!
Cause what the diggen’s is better than a Blue Ball Mason Jar Vase?
Answer: A hanging one of course!!
Read on for the full How-To!!

You will need:
20 gauge stainless wire
old jar
needle nose pliers
wire strippers
First make a loop in the wire like this.

Grab a’ hold where your loop meets
(while holding wire with other hand.. I only had 4 arms to do this demo..haha!)
And twist.

Hold wire on jar to determine where direct opposite is to form your other loop.

Bend wires and twist to hold.
Then trim.

Cut wire as long as you’d like your handle to be.

Hang on to the loop with the wire strippers
while you wrap the wire with your hand.
(I found the 20 gauge wire to be PERFECT!
Sturdy, yet easy to work with… here and here are great sources!)

Trim, trim, watch out eyes.. that wire flies!

Bend that sharp (OW!) end down with the end of your strippers.

See, even I can make a semi-professional looking loop.
(which means you’ll be able to NO problem-O!)

What would you put in here?
A candle (battery operated only for me!)
flowers, sand, driftwood, loose change, bug repellant,
grasshopper collection, ok just checking if you’re still with me :)
Have fun! Let me know how it turns out you wire wielding rock star!!
-Heather :)
Yes, I do sell the wire already made to attach to your own jar HERE.

Years ago I made several of these lanterns when I made over my patio in a rental. I put up lattice for privacy and hung the lanterns on the lattice, and they were sooooo beautiful when lit at night. I love the idea of putting flowers in them too, yours look amazing in the blue color.

oh these are so much fun! i think i'm going to do this but with plants actually growing in them outside… i think a succulent plant would work well!

Love all things mason jars! Can you share where you found the “frog lids” for the stemmed flowers? Thanks!
