You asked.. White Mason Jar Soap Dispensers

by Heather on September 14, 2011

I’ve had some questions on my White Mason Jar Soap Dispensers lately.. I hope this helps :)

White Mason Jar Soap Dispenser-How did you get this idea?

Like all the others.. at 4 am when I’m supposed to be sleeping! :) haha. Well it is getting harder and harder to find the antique blue jars but there are always PLENTY of old clear jars around and I wanted to figure out a way to recycle use them. But since a plain ‘ole clear jar doesn’t really grab me.. I thunk and thought for a whole year before I finally figured out a way to turn them WHITE!

-Well aren’t you going to tell me how you did it?!

OK, OK, Y’know I love divulging my juicey secrets! Yes, this jar is actually painted. But there are more than a few tricks I pulled to get that paint to stick! Maybe one day I shall reveal them all ;)

White Mason Jar Soap Dispenser-So it’s paint?! Doesn’t paint rub off of glass?

Like I said. Secret weapons involved here. This paint does actually stick.. thanks to some texture. Here’s the low-down. If you take the jar and scratch it with.. say a butter knife, it will scrape off where you went at it. (though NOBODY doesn that kind of stuff but my kids, right?!) ;) But in everyday use and then some, she’ll stay beautiful. One place where a small amount of paint will rub off is the very bottom where the surface rubs on the sink. But it isn’t noticeable (since it’s the bottom) and it will never peal or flake.

-What is the finish like on the jar?

It is a very old world matte finish. It has some texture.. it is definitely NOT smooth and shiny. It reminds me of very old pottery. (which I LOVE!)

I love you site. I also love the soap dispensers. I was doing a search on how to make them when I found your site. What I am wondering is where to find the old lids. I just have more modern rings with lids you insert in. Thanks! Nichole

Hey Heather, Love your blog. I found this and thought I’d share bc you were talking about how it is harder to find the antique blue mason jars. You can just make them!
