Good day to you! Are you a hope-to-never recover book-a-holic like me? The awesomeness that is the internet will never be able to replace a good ole snuggle with a stack of books, some knitting, and a lap full of kiddos… and a cup of coffee teetering precariously nearby. Yes folks, that has been my life this winter!
So it shouldn’t be too surprising that I’ve been whipping things up out of random odds and ends from falling-apart books. This project is only the first of a few that I’ve been working on. The rest will be in the Spring Magazine out in a couple of weeks! I’ve also decided that we’re way over-due for a lil giveaway! So not only will I be sharing how I made these but also you will have a chance to win them yourself… as well as this little antique bottle, and four bars of my handmade soap! Aw, what-the-digs….. let’s throw in a calendar too!!
ok, ya’ll ready for this??
Actually much of how I made these has already been shared here on the blog. Check out how to decorate and protect the tiles in this post here. (yes, I am still working on adding more videos for the stool project!) Alright, now that you’ve finished that it is on to the next….
In order to drill through tiles you will need a power screw gun (we have a drill press and that works even better, but either will do the trick.) You also need a diamond dust whole saw to cut through the tile (a bit I bought off of Amazon.)
After you mark your holes to drill you can begin setting up. You will need either a shallow tray of water to drill your tile in or an extra set of hands with a spray bottle spraying the bit as you drill. It won’t work to do it dry… it will burn up and not cut at all. Be sure that the area stays wet the whole while you are drilling. Go nice and slow… if you are using a hand held screw gun it helps to ‘mark’ your hole first by starting the tip at a 45 degree angle. Once you have a well defined hole for the tip to bite into hold the gun back to 90 degrees.
Drilling through glass is so much fun… when I first learned how almost anything was fair game. Plates were being screwed on the wall, tea cups were being transformed into planters, and even jars got holes in them. (Though I never did quite figure out what the purpose of a holy jar would be! haha)
Thanks so very much for following along on this little project today! Hopefully I’ve inspired you to wield that gun and bit like it is about going out of style! Even if you like the look of these but don’t feel like bothering with the drilling you could glue felt to the bottoms and make coasters, or use a very strong glue to attach picture hangers to the backs.
ok peeps! Have fun! Be safe!!
